Resources for Parents

There are some great materials in the bookstores that can be really helpful for parents. These are things that are easily found. More importantly, they are very practical. You can get a great deal of information that works in everyday situations.

Dr. Barry Brazelton and Dr. Joshua Sparrow put together two excellent books in a set. You may have seen them in your local bookstore. The title is Touchpoints and together the books cover birth to age 3 and then age 3 to 6. It looks like a lot of reading but you don't have to read them from start to finish. Use them as reference books that every parent should have at their fingertips. It's an investment well worth the money. The publisher is Perseus Publishing and the books came out in 2001.

Dr. Stanley Greenspan wrote The Challenging Child in 1995 which means that the book is a few years old. However, it's still filled with excellent information that is relevant today. His approach is to help parents understand and enjoy children with personality types that can present some difficulties. What is especially helpful about this book is that there is a section that helps parents identify their child's personality type. Once you know that, you can find some really helpful ideas for having a great time raising your child. The publisher is Perseus Publishing Co.

Lawrence Steinberg, Ph.D., whose doctorate is in Human Development and Family Studies, revised his book Adolescence in 1996 making it the fourth edition. Of all the researchers and writers who deal with adolescent development, Steinberg does it with humor, honesty and makes sure that parents who read his work understand that adolescence is a developmental stage in life that can be warm and exciting for both parents and youth. Every parent of an adolescent or soon to be adolescent should try this book. It reads like a textbook and in fact, it is one used in many university classrooms. The really great part is that it is also readable. It has a good index so you can look up topics that are of interest to you as a parent. McGraw-Hill published this book.

There are many other resources in bookstores and on line. I will be making some additions to this list in the near future. I hope that visitors to this site will pass along resources that they have found useful.
